Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers visitors a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most notable and best preserved in the United States. Far View Visitor Center is the place to start your Mesa Verde National Park adventure. The Visitor Center allows you to buy tickets to see the incredible Cliff Palace, Balcony House or Long House cliff dwellings. This National Park offers hiking trails, bird watching, cross country skiing, photography and wildlife observation, but the primary attraction at Mesa Verde are the cliff dwellings. The five dwellings include Cliff Palace, Balcony House, Spruce Tree House, Long House and Step House. You may take a self-guided tour of Spruce Tree House, which is the best-preserved cliff dwelling, as well as Mesa Top Loop Road, Far View Sites Complex, Cedar Tree Tower, as well as Step House. Ranger-guided tours are available to see Cliff Palace, which is Mesa Verde’s largest cliff dwelling, Balcony House, a more detailed tour of Spruce Tree House, and Long House. Many of these tours begin at the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum, which is open all year and displays dioramas of Ancestral Puebloan life, and other prehistoric artifacts.
