Midwest Automotive Designs was established in 2000 with a focused mission: build luxury personal-use conversions on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform. Mercedes-Benz Approved Upfitter: The Signature Credential
Midwest Automotive Designs is the first Quality Approved upfitter for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in the U.S. That credential isn't handed out broadly. Mercedes-Benz requires approved upfitters to meet exacting standards in engineering, fabrication, electrical integration, safety compliance, and finish quality. Only then will the company lend its name and warranty support to a third-party conversion. Midwest earned the approval because every coach is fabricated in-house, from seating to woodwork to paint, in facilities built around the Sprinter platform. Midwest also led development of the first second-stage conversion Sprinter that meets all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The Freedom Package: First Lithium-Electric Sprinter Conversion
In 2016, Midwest introduced the original Freedom Package: the first lithium-electric power system in a Sprinter conversion designed to remove onboard propane entirely. That innovation reshaped the luxury Class B segment. Before 2016, Class B camper vans relied on propane tanks for cooking, water heating, and cabin heat, plus a gas generator for off-grid power. The Freedom Package replaced all of it. The fully electric platform runs on lithium batteries, a high-output inverter, an under-hood secondary alternator, and a diesel-fired cabin heater and water heater fed by the Sprinter's existing fuel tank. The result: single-fuel travel, no propane refills, and no gas generator maintenance.
The current Freedom 1080 Package descends directly from that 2016 original.
